Discussion Questions

1. Castells discusses how military research was one of the ways the Internet was first invented.  How was the Internet technologies used back then for military science and how is it being used now, in regards to nuclear science?

2. How did the fact that users also became producers of the content on the internet, make the internet more wide spread?

3. Castells discusses how the Internet transformed business today.  How would business be different without the Internet, and has the Internet made the business world more organized and easier to run or more difficult?

Network is the Message

What does Castells mean when he suggests that the "Network is the Message" in the prologue to his text?

Castells defines a network as a set of interconnected nodes. He discusses how Internet was designed as free communication and has become the fastest growing form of media.  Castells believes that the Internet has great advantages over other forms of media because it is more flexible and has better adaptability.  Castells suggest that the "network" is our future of communication, and especially media, as long as we are careful and resourceful of how we use it.

About me

Hi! My name is Alix and I'm currently a junior at Loyola University of Chicago, majoring in Public Relations and Advertising with a minor in Theatre.  After I graduate I plan on moving to Los Angeles, California to look for a job in casting in the entertainment industry.

Let's go back to the beginning though! I was
born in East Grand Rapids, Michigan in August 1988. I went to a Montessori elementary school, and then went to East Grand Rapids public schools until I graduated from high school in 2006.  In high school I was very involved in theatre, acting/dancing in about 3 shows per year. When I wasn't acting I was involved in music. I play the flute and the piccolo and was part of the East Grand Rapids marching band, symphony band, and orchestra. I enjoyed high school quite a bit, but was excited to move to Chicago and away from the small city of East Grand Rapids.

In January 2008, I made a life changing choice to do the Disney College Program in Orlando Florida.  January 28, 2008 I moved into
my new apartment on Disney property.  The Disney College Program has college students become cast members in one many different roles of the Walt Disney World Resorts and Parks.  My role was in merchandise at Disney's Hollywood Studios. I worked at popular attractions such as Rock N Rollercoaster starring Aerosmith, The Tower of Terror, and the night time spectacular Fantasmic! It really broadened my horizons by working and living with not only people from all over the country, but all over the world.  I now keep in contact with people from Spain, England, Mexico, Norway, and many other countries. While working and living at Disney I met people that changed my life and I feel incredibly lucky to have been able to have this experience.

Once I graduate from Loyola in May 2010 (hopefully!) I am moving to the Burbank area of California with two of my closest friends.  We are packing up all our belongs and making a two week road trip across the country to see National landmarks and other quirky things that the middle of the country has to offer (hopefully things like the Biggest Ball of String, ha!). I have enjoyed my time here at Loyola but I feel very ready to move onto the next part of my life, and hopefully work with the Walt Disney company again!
